Wild Strawberry

Fragaria virginiana

Wild strawberry makes the perfect green mulch, protecting the ground from drying out without having to be re-applied like wood mulch. It grows very well with other plants. The flowers are very attractive to beneficial insects.

Habitat: Open woods, meadows

Soil: Adaptable

Companions: Makes a great ground-cover companion for almost any plant which grows in the same conditions. Use as a green mulch.

Propagation: Seeds do not readily germinate. Propagate wild strawberry through stolon cuttings.

Wildlife Value: The flowers are especially attractive to native bees and natural enemies. Small, but sweet, strawberries are relished by wildlife from birds to chipmunks. Edible for humans too!
